A sound you don't want to hear

Birds singing, wind blowing through new leaves, people walking past the house -- these sounds I enjoy hearing as the weather warms. But this time of year also reminds me of a horrible sound I heard years ago just after my young son went out for a bike ride.

I was working in the garage when he buckled up his helmet and hopped on his bike. "Bye, Mom!" he said as he took off down the driveway and onto the sidewalk. Within seconds I heard it -- a desperate horn blast. I tore out of the garage and down the street toward the direction my son went. I got to the street corner at Woodcreek and Morningside just in time to hear my son saying "sorry" to a driver as he climbed out from under her SUV. He had been crossing the street, and she had turned left into him.

The front wheel of his bike was frighteningly bent, but all of his body parts were attached and working well. My son -- and the driver -- were lucky that day. However, every day I see people speed past my house, roll through stop signs or cut their turns short. An accident waiting to happen? It can happen here. It has happened here.

As more of our neighbors are out playing, walking and jogging in this beautiful weather, let's all remember that we are driving through residential streets. No matter how hurried we are, we have the time to be safe, keep our neighbors safe and enjoy the sounds of spring.
