One day last week, I saw a black pickup truck backed all the way to my garage door. My car was in the garage so the driver couldn't have known I was home--it was earlier than normal for our family. He took off when he saw me look out the window.

I suspect the guy was getting ready to try to find a way in (we have a remote keypad outside the garage door but he shouldn't have known the code so I don't know what he was planning. I just know that someone merely turning around in the driveway doesn't back all the up to the garage door) when he saw me looking out the window.

A sound you don't want to hear

Birds singing, wind blowing through new leaves, people walking past the house -- these sounds I enjoy hearing as the weather warms. But this time of year also reminds me of a horrible sound I heard years ago just after my young son went out for a bike ride.

I was working in the garage when he buckled up his helmet and hopped on his bike. "Bye, Mom!" he said as he took off down the driveway and onto the sidewalk. Within seconds I heard it -- a desperate horn blast. I tore out of the garage and down the street toward the direction my son went. I got to the street corner at Woodcreek and Morningside just in time to hear my son saying "sorry" to a driver as he climbed out from under her SUV. He had been crossing the street, and she had turned left into him.

The front wheel of his bike was frighteningly bent, but all of his body parts were attached and working well. My son -- and the driver -- were lucky that day. However, every day I see people speed past my house, roll through stop signs or cut their turns short. An accident waiting to happen? It can happen here. It has happened here.

As more of our neighbors are out playing, walking and jogging in this beautiful weather, let's all remember that we are driving through residential streets. No matter how hurried we are, we have the time to be safe, keep our neighbors safe and enjoy the sounds of spring.

Disaster Relief

RE: Disaster Relief

God forbid what happened in Piner, KY would ever happen in our community.  It is, however, a good idea to be as prepared as possible.  It sure makes one re-think backing up storage of important information and things in the home.  Some from within our community have had disaster relief training and others are engaging in it.  Let's stay connected as a community so as to be able to pull together in any time of need.  Below is some info about a day I spent helping a tornado victim down in Piner.

RE: A little help for Tornado victims

Hi,

Today, Bill Leatherbee and I were privileged to serve a family in Piner, the Milner's, that survived the big storm. Let me assure you that the power of these storms are something to behold. Rob Milner made it to the basement but his wife Margie hid in a closet. That part of the house was the only part still standing. She told me she looked up saw sky and thank God that it wasn't her time yet. And it wasn't. We cut and stacked downed trees and helped in a small way but all of these folks need support and prayer as those that survived try to re-build their lives. It was an eye opener and a blessed experience all at the same time.

Few pics from our day helping the Milner's (victims of the Piner Tornado). At the beginning showing the ridge acrossed the road where three brick homes were but were completely, (I mean completely) gone. God help all those trying to rebuild and may they lean heavily on your grace and strength.

Siren Policy of Boone Co

RE: When the Co Sirens blow:

With the severe weather expected tomorrow, please note that Boone County has recently changed its siren policy. The sirens will sound only during a tornado warning. A story in the Enquirer newspaper today contained incorrect information. I contacted the reporter and he said he would run a correction and confirmed that Boone County sounds emergency weather sirens only during a tornado warning.

Stay safe!

ALERT - Car Break Ins Oakbrook

From a Watch member:

Just wanted to alert our watch group to keep car doors locked. A friend of mine lives in Oakbrook near the swim club and had both of their cars broken into Saturday 2-18. One car was easy to get into because she did not have the doors locked. Money and ipods were stolen but thankfully the garage door opener to their home was not taken.

13 Tips About Burglars

This has been out before, but there are a couple of new one's included..............
13 THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU

There are some really great tips here: The best are near the end. Common sense applied in a vigorous way. 13 THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU I am particularly interested in the part about the wasp spray...

1. Of course I look familiar.  I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week.  While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers.  That tells me you have taste... and taste means there are nice things inside.  Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway.  And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it..

5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house.. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set.  That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink.  And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry.  It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door - understandable.  But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first.  If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters.  (Don't take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer?  I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables.  But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television.  (Find it at http://www.faketv/.com/%29 8 MORE

THINGS A BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU:

1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake.  I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.
2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.
3. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again.  If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing.  It's human  nature.
4. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?
5. I love looking in your windows.  I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like.  I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.
6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page.  It's easier than you think to look up your address.
7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air.  To me, it's an invitation.
8. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in. Sources: Convicted burglars in North Carolina, Oregon, California, and Kentucky; security consultant Chris McGoey, who runs  http://www.crimedoctor.com/ and Richard T. Wright, a criminology professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, who interviewed 105 burglars for his book Burglars on the Job.

Protection for you and your home: If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil plans for you. WASP SPRAY A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection.  She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The  wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the  hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection... Thought this was interesting and might be of use.

FROM ANOTHER SOURCE: On the heels of a break-in and beating that left an elderly woman in Toledo  dead, self-defense experts have a tip that could save your life. Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania SouthviewHgh School.  For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed. Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them." Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says, "spray the culprit in the eyes". It's a tip he's given to students for decades. It's also one he wants everyone to hear.  If you're looking for protection, Glinka says look to the  spray. "That's going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out." Maybe even save a life.

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr.'s office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across.  Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.  The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator.  Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation.  Test it.  It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until  you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.  If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around.  After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that.  And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot.  The alarm can work the same way there.  This is something that should really be shared with everyone.  Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

10 Tips to Protect Home

This article was written by Adrienne Carlson with permission for LouisvilleHomesBlog.com to publish so that you can be better informed in all of your housing decisions here in Louisville, Kentucky. Adrienne regularly writes on the topic of construction management degrees
and welcomes your comments and questions at her email address: drienne.carlson83@yahoo.com.

According to the FBI, a house, apartment, or condominium is burglarized once every 15 seconds. This results in thousands per hour and untold millions in stolen goods, not to mention the rise in insurance premiums. Don’t be part of the statistics by following these top ten DIY cheap and easy ways to protect your home.

DIY Cheap and Easy Ways to Protect Your Doors

According to a study by the California Crime Technological Research Foundation, the most common ways burglars use to break into homes involve doors. Use the below for inexpensive and simple ways to strengthen them.
1. Replace Locks: Unless you are the first owner, chances are the keys to your home are still out there. Old and outdated locks are also another good reason to replace. State Farm recommends an ANSI Grade 1 lock, the more pins, the better. Be sure to address all entry doors. All you need to install them is a screwdriver.
2. New Strike Plates: Because most strike plates come with holes for two screws, they are easier to break into. Try finding a strike plate that has four holes for screws, making it twice as hard to kick down or pry open. Whether upgrading to four screws or staying with two, be sure to use wood screws that are a minimum of two inches in length.
3. Upgraded Door Hinges: If any of your entry doors swings outward, a burglar may be able to enter your home by simply removing the pins from your door hinges. Don’t tear your hair out over replacing the entire door and frame just yet, there are cheap and easy DIY options. Try getting a hinge with non-removable or fast-riveted pins or even a safety stud.

Low Tech DIY Cheap and Easy Ways to Protect Your Home

You don’t have to be computer or hardware savvy to utilize the below ways to protect your home.
4. Neighborhood Watch: Because if the whole neighborhood is watching, it will be like your home is never empty. USA On Watch can help you find one in your city or help you start your own. You can also visit National Neighborhood Watch Institute for supplies, handbooks, decals, and more.
5. Alarm Decal or Sticker: Use these decals, stickers, and signs to let criminals know your home is protected by an alarm system or camera, even if it is not. This online store sells a variety of impress security signs and can even customize them. If you prefer a more authentic one, contact the security provider of your choice to purchase your decal directly from them.
6. Lock the doors and windows! The most common ways burglars enter into homes, it happens more than you think. Many of these criminals will even enter an unlocked home if there are people inside. Still have a hard time remembering? Then read this story to remind yourself why.

High Tech DIY Cheap and Easy Ways to Protect Your Home

Although some tech is required, by no means is a doctorate in science needed to follow these higher tech ways to protect your home.
7. Light It! Because criminals like to work in the dark, nothing stops them in their tracks light a security light. Whether security or motion detecting, these lights are easy to install, even if you don’t have any experience. This article on eHow gives detailed instructions on how to install security lighting and even offers related videos.
8. Use That PC Camera: Follow the instructions on this site to turn your PC web camera into a motion detection and recording security camera. You only need a PC (Mac instructions coming soon), web camera, and Dorgem. There are even advanced options and a how-to on working with multiple cameras.
9. DIY Home Alarm: Install yourself and customize yourself to protect your home cheaply and easily. You don’t need a monitoring service for the alarm to go off when a door is opened or window is broken. In addition, criminals won’t know if the alarm is hooked up and neighbors who hear it are likely to phone for help. UDoItAlarms sells a variety of DIY home security products and even has how-to videos.
10. A Real Home Alarm: Competitively priced for installation and surveillance, many security systems can actually give you a break on your home owner’s insurance. This site has a beginner’s guide to home security, explanations on common security devices, and even a Just For Fun section. Be sure to check out the Review tab for reports on security providers such as Brinks and Protection One before purchasing.
Although break-ins can be scary, they are one of the most preventable of crimes. Even though nothing is guaranteed, you are far less likely to become a victim after doing all of these top ten DIY cheap and easy ways to protect your home.
